I got a book a few days ago and it got me thinking. Both Washington and Jefferson warned us about “political parties”. I think I understand now what he meant. You can look up the term “biblical”. Q has used it several times. Most older definitions indicate it just means “Pertaining to the Bible”. (That definition from Webster’s 1828 dictionary.) Over the last few years, that definition has been allowed to morph into something meaning “huge event”, “awesome”, or some other description of a gigantic change. I want to go back to the 1828 Webster’s and use that.
The book I received a few days ago is, “The Majesty of God’s Law” by W. Cleon Skousen. Different chapters caught my eye, especially chapter 31, “The Restoration of the Original Constitution”. I jumped ahead to page 525 where it began. In moments, I had my answer to the paradox of political parties our founding fathers warned us about.
Over and over, I have heard about how political parties are necessary to generate enough teams to do the necessary work to get someone elected. Very few people I’ve met have anything good to say about parties. Right now, our country is split into about thirds between Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters. I think that shows how the America populace is beginning to sour on the idea of political parties. What if there was a way to get rid of the parties? In answer to that question, I’ve always heard that without a party, one cannot generate the necessary votes to get elected. After reading just part of Skousen’s book, I completely disagree.
He mentions Deuteronomy 1:13-15 by the second page of chapter 31. Then he explains the cited Bible verse. “Ten families elect a leader, then five of these groups join to elect a leader of fifty families, two groups of fifty combine to elect a captain of a hundred families. The ‘Hundred’ became the basic community unit in ancient Israel and later among the Anglo-Saxons which Jefferson studied so diligently.”
Oh my! With this single appeal to the Bible, in three versus, quietly sitting there all this time is the answer to the question of “how do we get rid of parties?”. Simple. Elegant. Biblical. If we want our Constitution back (and I do!) along with a freer country, I think this is where we start.
